Mirrors was the second single from Justin Timberlake’s 2013 album The 20/20 Experience. The first, Suit & Tie, was released in January. Mirrors was quickly released a few weeks later and entered the chart at Number 28 before rising to Number 4.
Tiumberlake then performed the song at The Brit Awards and it suddenly caught on in a big way and it leaped to Number 1 where is stayed for three weeks altogether.
It enjoyed eight weeks in the Top 10 and it didn’t leave the Top 100 until October that year.
The song is quite unusual in that it was over 8 minutes long and did not, at first, have a radio edit, meaning that radio stations had to fade it out.
By November 2016 the single had combined sales of 929,000.
In January 2018 the OCC announced that combined sales were just over 1 million.
Shape of You was released in January 2017 as one of the two lead singles from his third album ÷ alongside Castle On The Hill. Shape of You proved to the most popular of the two, in terms of streaming and downloading, and the single took just eight weeks before selling its million copy and becoming a double platinum single.
Shape of You became a platinum seller on 3rd February 2017 on its fourth week on sale.
For the first five weeks whilst Shape of You was at Number 1, Castle on the Hill was at Number 2. Here are the other occasions where one artist has held the Number 1 and 2 positions at the same time.
Some dance remixes were released in February 2017 before Ed performed the song with grime artist Stormzy at The Brits 2017. The full recording of the Stormzy Remix was released and gave Shape of You its second best weekly sale to date.
Sheeran released his album on Friday 3rd March 2017 and on that day Shape of You was announced as a double platinum seller. Alan Jones of Music Week wrote:
Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You registers an emphatic eighth straight week atop the singles chart, with the new Stromzy and Major Lazer mixes of the song – particularly the former – making a major contribution to its 144,385 sales (including 73,005 from streaming), its highest tally since it sold 226,808 copies on debut. That brings cumulative sales of Shape Of You (including 516,190 from streams) to more than a million – 1,004,732 to be precise, using the new 1;150 streaming conversion rate, though an interrogation of the Official Charts Company database returns a figure of 1,262,827, as it continues to use the historic 1:100 streaming conversion rate for everything but the chart itself. So Shape Of You is approaching half a million (paid-for) sales, has just topped the million mark and has surpassed 1.25m, depending on how you look at it.
Today @EdSheeran released his new album ‘÷’ and ‘Shape Of You’ is 2x Platinum in the UK!
On 4th March 2017 Shape of You was announced as Ed Sheeran’s third biggest seller of all time (although it will likely overtake The A Team to become his second soon). The OCC wrote:
It may have been in our lives for only a couple of months, but Shape Of You is already nudging its way into the history books and Ed’s all-time Top 3. Since its release in January, Shape of You has been downloaded over 488.500 times and has notched up 77.43 million streams.
This is the first time that a song has been announced as a million seller whilst still at Number 1 since Drake’s epic 15 week run at the top in 2016.
On 10-3-2017, Shape Of You scored its ninth week at Number 1 – the first time two consecutive singles have reigned at the top for nine weeks (the previous one was Rockabye by Clean Bandit). On this date, Ed Sheeran broke records which will probably never be broken again. He had the top six places in the chart, and nine out of ten places in the Top Ten. All sixteen tracks from his new album, ÷, entered the Top 20. Such domination of the chart has simply never happened before and probably never will again! James Arthur had one of the most successful winners singles ever when he won The X Factor in 2012 with Impossible. He returned to the chart later in 2013 before spectularly allowing himself to implode and seriously damage his reputation with a series of stupid and ignorant comments and lyrics. He was dropped by Syco in 2014.
In September 2016 he returned to the chart with a superb modern day love song, Say You Won’t Let Go. He was re-signed by Syco whilst the song reached Number 1 after just three weeks on sale.

You’ll Never Walk Alone is best known as the anthem of Liverpool Football Club. In fact, it started out as a showtune – from the musical Carousel.
Liverpool fans loved it so much in the 1960s that they adopted it as their anthem. Celtic also adopted it.
It has been covered many times by many artists, but the most famous recording is now a million seller. Gerry and the Pacemakers had enjoyed two number 1s and became the first group ever to have three Number 1s with their first three hits when You’ll Never Walk Alone reached the top of the charts.
Altogether it had 22 weeks on the chart. In 2012 it was around 40,000 copies short of selling its millionth.
Another cover reached Number 1 in 1985. It was recorded by a collaboration , including Gerry Marsden, called The Crowd. It was used to raise funds for victims’ families of the 1985 Bradford City Football Club fire.
In 2012, when the verdict of the inquest into the awful Hillsborough disaster was announced, the song reached Number 1 on iTunes and re-entered the full chart at Number 12.

After entering the charts at Number 16 on its release, Starships climbed into the Top 10 a week later and spent 11 weeks in the Top 10 altogether. It remained in the charts until November 2012 when it finally left the Top 100. It returned for a few weeks in 2013.
