The Chainsmokers started out as a novelty dance group, with their song #selfie reaching the Top 20 in 2014. In 2016 they returned in a massive way with hits Roses and Don’t Let Me Down. But it was Closer that went stratospheric! It was the song of the Autumn.
Closer first charted at Number 33 in August 2016. It gradually climbed the chart and reached the summit in its fifth week on release. It stayed at the top for four weeks altogether. By November the song was still in the Top 3 and it enjoyed 16 weeks in the Top 10. As of January 2017 the single is still in the Top 30.
The song made its millionth combined sale in December 2016. It ended the year with sales of 1,143,000 and was the seventh biggest selling single of 2016.
