The third million-selling single from The X Factor was Alexandra Burke’s debut Hallejuah.
When the classic Leonard Cohen song ‘Hallelujah’ was announced as the X Factor winner’s single internet campaigns were launched to get an alternative recording of the track to Number 1. The version of choice was Jeff Buckley’s 1994 version. All of this attention drew attention to Burke’s version as well and she sold almost 600,000 copies in the first week on sale. Her version flew straight to Number 1, had the Christmas Number 1 and the biggest-selling single of 2008. In the end, Jeff Buckley’s version reached Number 2 and Leonard Cohen’s original reached Number 36. This was the first time in 51 years that Numbers 1 and 2 in the chart were recordings of the same chart. (The previous time was Tommy Steele and Guy Mitchell’s versions of ‘Singin’ The Blues’.)
In August 2017 combined sales were confirmed as 1.38 million copies and it was highlighted as the second biggest selling X Factor winners’ singles ever.
