The biggest-selling single in the 21st century for over a decade was Will Young’s debut hit Anything Is Possible/Evergreen.
The song was chosen for the finalist of the TV show Pop Idol. All three finalists (Gareth Gates, Darius Danesh and Will Young) recorded a version of the song but only the winner’s recording would be released. Will Young won the show with 4.6 million (out of 8.7 million) votes. The song was released two weeks later (the quickest time within which the record producer could print copies at the time).
The sales of the single were astonishing – 403,000 copies sold on its first day alone! 1.1 million copies were sold during its first week. It was the fastest selling single since Elton John’s Candle In The Wind ’97. By the end of its chart run it had been certified triple platinum.
As of March 2015, Anything Is Possible/Evergreen is one of only five singles in the last 21 years to be certified triple platinum (1.8 million sales). The others are Candle In The Wind ’97, Barbie Girl, Believe and Happy.
Will Young went on to have three further Number 1s.
On 3rd March 2017 the OCC announced that 2 people had downloaded the song during that week.
In December 2017 sales were confirmed as 1.78 million.
