PEAK POSITION: Number 1 for 7 weeks, one in December 2014 and six in January 2015
COMBINED SALES: 3 million (September 2018)
RELEASE DATE: December 2014
WHEN DID IT REACH ONE MILLION SALES: 15th February 2015
Usually X Factor contestants are given current or past songs to perform on the show. In December 2014 Simon Cowell gave contestant Fleur East a song which wasn’t due to be released until the January of the following year – it was called Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. She gave an incredible performance – so much so that her recording climbed to Number 1 of the iTunes chart. Although X Factor songs are not eligible to chart, the record company acted fast to prevent Fleur’s recording taking away sales. The official version was rush released (five weeks early!!) and it flew straight to Number 1 in the official chart on its release (the week before Christmas) with sales of 118,000. In its first six weeks on sale the single sold in excess of 100,000 copies every week. It broke streaming records and was the first single to be streamed over 2 million times in a week.
The song fell to Number 2 during the Christmas chart (inevitably X Factor winner Ben Haenow would be Christmas number 1) but then Uptown Funk went back to Number 1 and it stayed there for six weeks – well into February.
It spent 18 weeks in the Top Ten and was still in the Top Three when it was announced as a million seller. Almost a year after its release the song was still in the Top 75, with 39 of those weeks spent in the Top 40.
In May 2015 the list of writers of the song was updated to include writers of the song ‘Oops Upside Your Head’.
In May 2015 it was only the third record in the 21st century to be certified as three times platinum.

A year after it first reached Number 1 the song is still in the Top 75 biggest selling singles.
The song is continually parodied on YouTube:
The song was an instant classic and you’ll be hearing it for many more years to come.
This is Mark Ronson’s first million seller. But it is Bruno Mars’ second after Just The Way You Are (Amazing).
In January 2018 downloads were recorded as over 1.6 million with 115 million streams!
Uptown Funk was announced as the biggest selling British hit of the millennium. It has combined sales of over 2,350,000.
