Put simply, Thinking Out Loud is a classic. It has broken many records during its spectacular chart run and it is destined to be one of the great songs of the 21st century.
Ed Sheeran released his album X in July 2014. On its release, every one of the tracks on it made its way into the Top 100 of the singles chart. One of those tracks was a beautiful ballad called Thinking Out Loud. It entered the chart at Number 26.
This was the start of its long climb to the summit. On its 19th week in the chart it finally reached Number 1! This is the longest climb to Number 1 ever, beating the rises of Jennifer Rush’s The Power Of Love and Celine Dion’s Think Twice which both took thirteen weeks.
Thinking Out Loud stayed at the top for one week before falling to Number 2 for two weeks and Number 4 for two weeks. Then the song was performed by a contestant on The X Factor and it then climbed back to Number 1! No song has ever been Number 1 24 weeks into its chart career!

The song was released in a new era of the charts as streams were introduced into the way the charts are calculated during its chart run. It set records for the most number of weekly streams, which have since been broken. So it finally sold its one millionth download in April 2015.
In June 2015, in its 51st consecutive week on the chart it broke Happy‘s record for the longest ever continuous Top 40 run. The following week, the week ending June 30th 2015 the song became the first single to ever spend a full calendar year in the Top 40.

A truly incredible chart performance of a truly incredible song.

In February 2017 figures were confirmed as 1.91 million downloads and over 112 million streams!
In March 2017 streams were reported to be 113 million! Thinking Out Loud was the first song to have more than 500 million streams, although streams have only counted towards the chart since July 2014, so ‘only’ the 113 million streams since count!
