Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne – Rather Be

rather be

PEAK POSITION: Number 1 (4 weeks)

COMBINED SALES: 2.218 million (September 2017)

DATE OF RELEASE: 17th January 2014

Rather Be is the 149th million seller to be announced by the Official Charts Company. This one is interesting as it is the first million seller to be announced that combines sales with streams after the announcement that streaming would be counted towards the charts.

Rather Be was released in January 2014 with huge sales during a typically slow sales period. It sold 163,000 copies in its first week on sale. It spent four consecutive weeks at Number 1, selling over half a million copies during this time. It remained in the Top 40 for months afterwards and was still there by the time it was announced as a million seller in July 2014.

Sales alone were around the 980,000 mark at the end of the first half of the year. At this point, there was an announcement that streaming would add count as ‘sales’ on the chart. In fact, when streaming was added in, over 1.2 million copies had been ‘sold’. It didn’t take long before Rather Be was announced as selling a million downloads. Note that streaming ‘sales’ do not count towards becoming a million seller – only physical sales and download sales.

Clean Bandit are a classical music/dance music crossover band and vocalist Jess Glynne is a new singer from London. Glynne returned to Number 1 a couple of weeks after Rather Be was dethroned as the voice on the dance single ‘My Love’ by Route 94.

Rather Be is the seventh song to cross over the million threshold in 2014, but it is the first song released in 2014 to be announced as a million seller.
