George Michael is one of the few individuals to have a million seller both in his own right and as a member of a group during his own lifetime. Careless Whisper was his debut solo single and it reached Number 1 between Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘Two Tribes’ and Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You’ – three million sellers in a row!
During its stay at the top, thankfully the single kept Black Lace’s ‘Agadoo’ at Number 2.
Careless Whisper was released after George Michael’s massive success in Wham! It was the biggest selling single of the year in America.
After Careless Whisper he released ‘A Different Corner’ and then ‘I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)’ with Aretha Franklin. Therefore he began his solo career with three consecutive Number 1 hits. This was something only Gerry & The Pacemakers and Frankie Goes To Hollywood had managed at the time. But since then, Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers, Robson & Jerome, the Spice Girls, Aqua, B*Witched, Westlife, Will Young and Gareth Gates have also managed!!
Don’t forget that in 1984 George Michael also sang on Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ – this means he had three million-selling songs in the same year.
In August 2017 sales figures were confirmed as 1.45 million copies.
