Ed Sheeran – Perfect

PEAK POSITION: Number 1 for six weeks in December 2017 to December 2018 (Chart History)

COMBINED SALES: 2.2 million (July 2018)

RELEASE DATE: March 2017

WHEN DID IT REACH ONE MILLION SALES: December 2017

Ed Sheeran’s Perfect entered the chart at Number in March 2017 as an album track when he released his third album, Divide. It spent 17 weeks on the chart on its initial chart run.

It dropped out of the chart in July 2017 after the Official Charts Company amended their chart compiling rules to stop artists having more than three singles charting at the same time. As he was promoting Shape Of You, Castle On The Hill and Galway Girl, Perfect was pushed out of the chart for a couple of months (although, had it been allowed to chart, it would have.)

In September 2017 the single was promoted to single proper and it re-entered at Number 77 where it gradually climbed. It was announced as a platinum seller as it commenced its second chart run.

Dance remixes were released in November 2017.

He announced that he had collaborated with a world class artist to ‘remix’ the track. The identity of the artist was eventually revealed to be Beyonce. By mid-December the single was at Number 1, Ed’s fourth.

The single made its combined millionth sale in mid-December 2017.

Music Week’s Alan Jones wrote:

Ed Sheeran’s Perfect may have moved to the chart summit anyway, but it became a nailed-on certainty once the duet version of the track, featuring Beyonce, was released. The Beyonce version drove consumption of the track to increase 174.90% week-on-week to 89,359 sales (including 45,460 from sales-equivalent streams) as it became Sheeran’s second No.1 from ÷ – following Shape Of You – and his fourth No.1 in total. With to-date sales of 1,048,313. it becomes Sheeran’s 10th million-selling single.

At this point he announced his determination that he wanted it to claim the Christmas Number 1 single.

He then dropped a second ‘remix’ with opera singer Andrea Bocelli. Perfect did, indeed, claim the Christmas Number 1. In fact the song stayed at Number 1 into January 2018.
