PEAK POSITION: Number 1 for thirteen weeks weeks in January 2017
COMBINED SALES: 3.6 million (April 2018)
RELEASE DATE: January 2017
WHEN DID IT REACH ONE MILLION SALES: March 2017
Shape of You was released in January 2017 as one of the two lead singles from his third album ÷ alongside Castle On The Hill. Shape of You proved to the most popular of the two, in terms of streaming and downloading, and the single took just eight weeks before selling its million copy and becoming a double platinum single.
Shape of You became a platinum seller on 3rd February 2017 on its fourth week on sale.

For the first five weeks whilst Shape of You was at Number 1, Castle on the Hill was at Number 2. Here are the other occasions where one artist has held the Number 1 and 2 positions at the same time.
Some dance remixes were released in February 2017 before Ed performed the song with grime artist Stormzy at The Brits 2017. The full recording of the Stormzy Remix was released and gave Shape of You its second best weekly sale to date.
Sheeran released his album on Friday 3rd March 2017 and on that day Shape of You was announced as a double platinum seller. Alan Jones of Music Week wrote:
Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You registers an emphatic eighth straight week atop the singles chart, with the new Stromzy and Major Lazer mixes of the song – particularly the former – making a major contribution to its 144,385 sales (including 73,005 from streaming), its highest tally since it sold 226,808 copies on debut. That brings cumulative sales of Shape Of You (including 516,190 from streams) to more than a million – 1,004,732 to be precise, using the new 1;150 streaming conversion rate, though an interrogation of the Official Charts Company database returns a figure of 1,262,827, as it continues to use the historic 1:100 streaming conversion rate for everything but the chart itself. So Shape Of You is approaching half a million (paid-for) sales, has just topped the million mark and has surpassed 1.25m, depending on how you look at it.
Today @EdSheeran released his new album ‘÷’ and ‘Shape Of You’ is 2x Platinum in the UK!

It may have been in our lives for only a couple of months, but Shape Of You is already nudging its way into the history books and Ed’s all-time Top 3. Since its release in January, Shape of You has been downloaded over 488.500 times and has notched up 77.43 million streams.
This is the first time that a song has been announced as a million seller whilst still at Number 1 since Drake’s epic 15 week run at the top in 2016.
On 10-3-2017, Shape Of You scored its ninth week at Number 1 – the first time two consecutive singles have reigned at the top for nine weeks (the previous one was Rockabye by Clean Bandit). On this date, Ed Sheeran broke records which will probably never be broken again. He had the top six places in the chart, and nine out of ten places in the Top Ten. All sixteen tracks from his new album, ÷, entered the Top 20. Such domination of the chart has simply never happened before and probably never will again!
